Oceania Championships providing form guide for upcoming worlds

It was a day of contrasts on day two of the 2019 Hyundai 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 Oceania Championships. With breezes at almost the polar opposite to yesterday with a 10-12 knot seabreeze from the north, the fleets headed to the second alloted course areas off the coast of Auckland’s North Shore. These are the same waters which will play host to the 2021 America’s Cup, in which many of the 49er and Nacra 17 athletes will be competing.

USA skiff teams lead from the front in Auckland

The USA 49er and 49erFX skiff teams blitzed day one of the Hyundai 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 Oceania Championship, the women’s pairing of Stephanie Robel and Maggie Shea posting a low score, thanks to two wins and a third, to lead the fleet and Rio 2016 Gold Medallists Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze of Brazil by 7 points.

Auckland delivers on opening day

Glamour conditions greeted the 178 international teams on the opening day of racing at the 2019 Hyundai 49er, 49erFX and Nacra17 Oceania Championships. The three-day warmup regatta before next weeks world championships is hosted by Auckland’s Royal Akarana Yacht Club on the shores of the Waitemata.
