High-octane Olympic racing is to return to Weymouth and Portland in 2019 after the RYA won its bid to host the Nacra 17, 49er and 49er FX European Championship.

The world’s best racers from the Olympic circuit will descend on the London 2012 sailing venue from May 13 to 19 to battle it out for the title of European champion.

It will be the first time since the 2016 Sailing World Cup Finals that the UK has hosted a major International Olympic Class regatta.

The event, held at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, will also mark the UK debut of Nacra 17 racing since the class become fully foiling in 2017.

UK Sport has provided National Lottery funding for the regatta, and WPNSA will act as hosts to deliver the event on behalf of the Nacra 17, 49er and 49er FX classes.

The European Championship will be vital regatta in the Tokyo 2020 cycle with a number of nations counting it towards team selection for the upcoming Olympic Games.

Crucially the regatta will continue the legacy of London 2012, offering world-class racing and shining a spotlight on WPNSA’s excellent facilities and organisation.

The event will create opportunities for UK race officials and volunteers to improve their skills at a high-profile, international event.

Esther Britten, Head of Major Events at UK Sport, said: “We are delighted that the Nacra 17, 49er and 49er FX European Championship is going to be held at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy in May 2019.

“It is fantastic to be returning to the amazing venue that hosting the London 2012 sailing competitions and I confident we will see a passionate home crowd, who will create an amazing atmosphere for all of the elite athletes.

“As we build toward Tokyo 2020, we are proud that this championship will be part of an exciting package of international sporting events, backed by National Lottery funding, we will stage in the UK over the coming years.”

Marcus Spillane, President of the International 49er and Nacra 17 Class Associations, said: “We are thrilled to be returning to Weymouth and Portland for one of the biggest championships of our classes.

“It is a fantastic place to sail, with unparalleled facilities and a volunteer base steeped in Olympic sailing. The London 2012 regatta brought out the best of what sailing can be, and we expect more of that in 2019 for our European Championship.”

Peter Allam, Chief Executive of Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, added: “We are delighted to be working with the RYA on delivering this exciting event and are really looking forward to welcoming some of the Olympic classes back to Weymouth and Portland.”

Ian Walker, the RYA’s Director of Racing, said: “These are the three fastest, most exciting Olympic Classes and this gives us a wonderful opportunity to showcase Olympic sailing to the British media and help inspire many young sailors of the future.”

Racing will take place on four course areas – one inside of Portland Harbour and three in Weymouth Bay. The final three days of the regatta will be broadcast live.

Teams wishing to enter the 2019 European Championship should do so via the website here.

A warm-up regatta for the classes will be held at WPNSA from May 4-6.

Anyone wishing to volunteer for the European Championship should contact event manager Olivia Risk on olivia.risk@rya.org.uk.

Shipping & Logistics

The Royal Geelong Yacht Club is situated in the heart of Geelong and central along the waterfront. The Club will temporarily extend its footprint to create a boat park for the 49er/FX/Nacra 17 World Championships. We will therefore not be able to accommodate Trailers or Containers on site. A separate Trailer/Container compound will be setup at Limeburners Point Boat Ramp on the waterfront approx. 2km from the Yacht Club which will also be the main RIB launching area. Those wishing to store containers at Limeburners Point will need to contact Cargo Live to book and arrange details (there is only space available for approximately 25 containers on site).  Cargo Live is the Official Event Logistics partner and will be managing container storage bookings for the event.

CargoLive Global Events are the logistics experts when it comes to major sporting events. Having been in business for more than 40 years, they have helped hundreds of competitors with all the logistics that goes with competing around the world. From the 2016 Rio Olympic Games to the 2019 Miami world championships, CargoLive have taken care of shipping for both competitors and regatta organisers. They are the main sponsors of the Australian Olympic team and also a supporter of Sailing Australia and other sporting events.

CargoLive will have a dedicated team to assist sailors competing in this year’s World Championships in Geelong and can assist with international shipping, customs clearance, border security and trucking. CargoLive will have staff on the ground at the event to supervise unpacking and packing and will also handle general queries about shipping to make life easy for visiting sailors and teams. If you wish to ship your boats for the next regatta or return home, they can help with it all.
