Diego Botin / Florian Trittel Paul

Diego Botín was born in Santander on Christmas Day 1993 and grew up on the water of the Bay of Santander, where his family has sailed for generations. He started at eight, was racing by nine, and came up through the Optimist under coach Pepe Lis at the Real Club Marítimo de Santander.

His first two Olympic campaigns came with Iago López Marra. They finished ninth in Rio in 2016 and then fourth in Tokyo, one place off the podium and close enough to hurt. Botín teamed up with Florian Trittel after that, and the pair won the European title in 2022 and medalled at three straight World Championships.

Paris 2024 was the payoff. They took gold in Marseille, the first Spanish gold of those Games, and were named World Sailors of the Year later that year. Botín also helms the Spanish SailGP team, which he steered to the Season 4 title, and he won his first 49er world title in Cagliari in October 2025.

He is now racing the 38th America's Cup with La Roche-Posay Racing Team while building towards a second Olympic gold in Los Angeles.

Florian Trittel was born in Münsterlingen, Switzerland, in May 1994, to a German sailing family who moved to Barcelona when he was three. He has represented Spain ever since and was on the water himself by six.

His route to the 49er was anything but direct. He won the 29er World Championship in 2012 with Carlos Robles, then spent time in Formula Kite, taking European silver in 2014 and bronze in 2016. He came back to Olympic sailing in the Nacra 17 with Tara Pacheco and the pair finished sixth at Tokyo 2020.

After Tokyo he joined Diego Botín in the 49er, and the partnership clicked almost immediately. European champions in 2022, three consecutive World Championship medals, then Olympic gold in Marseille in 2024, Spain's first gold of the Games. The two were named World Sailors of the Year that November, and won the 49er world title in Cagliari in 2025.

Trittel is also the wing trimmer for the Spanish SailGP team, Season 4 champions. He is racing the 38th America's Cup with La Roche-Posay Racing Team alongside Botín, with Los Angeles 2028 the shared goal.
