This month the 49er and Nacra 17 fleets welcomed back to shore many friends from the Volvo Ocean Race. The sailors looked like a mix of euphoric and defeated after nine months of racing around the world! While many sailors from 49er, 49erFX, and Nacra 17 took part, including leaders Xabi Fernandez and Chris Nicholson, there was also a huge group of newcomers including Peter Burling, Blair Tuke, Tamara Echegoyen, Martine Grael, Jena Hansen, Franchesca Clapchich, Hannah Diamon, and Emily Riou… well it got us thinking… would ya do it if you could?
Despite so many fleet members accepting round the world spots, there were also plenty of reports of top sailors turning down requests to race and/or try out for teams.

This question might become even more interested for Olympic Sailors than it already is. Rumors continue to swirl about Marseilles 2024 and an aim to include offshore sailing from the Marseilles venue. The initiative was narrowly defeated by World Sailing Council in May, but there remains a possibility of it coming in via an 11th medal. The worlds of offshore sailing and Olympic sailing are already close, so they may get even closer.
The 2018 49er, 49erFX & Nacra 17 European Championship, at Volvo Sailing Day Gdynia, is from July 8 – 13. Follow all the action via 49er.org – nacra17.org
