Closing Day for 49er and 49erFX at the 2023 Pan American Games

The final day of sailing at the 2023 Pan American Games provided a beautiful show, with medal races in the 49er and 49erFX classes that had spectators on the edge of their seats. The competition was fierce, the stakes were high, and the world-class sailors delivered a day of great action.

Pan American Games: 49er skiff

In the 49er class, it was a day filled with excitement, as the teams battled for the coveted medals and Olympic spots. As the tension reached its peak, it was the American duo of Barrows and Henken who clinched the gold medal. Their consistent performance throughout the week paid off, and they secured their place on the top step of the podium.

Diz and Umpierre from Uruguay gave it their all, winning three races on the day before the medal race, and securing the Olympic country spot for South America even before the Medal Race . With calmer ocean conditions and less challenging waves but with a favorable breeze, they were elated to be in the running for the gold medal. The competition was intense on medal race day, and they finished with the silver, only 8 points behind the American team.

Canada’s Jones and Barnes claimed the bronze medal, capping off an impressive campaign. With their tenacity and skill, they earned their place on the podium, and qualified the country for the 2024 Paris Olympics with the North American spot after a formidable fight with Mexico.

Pan American Games: 49erFX skiff

In the 49erFX class, the Brazilian duo of Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze had a standout performance. They maintained their lead throughout the week, staying in first place and demonstrating their dominance. With their gold medal, they not only celebrated their victory but also secured a spot for Brazil in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The competition was fierce for the silver and bronze medals. Canada’s Miller and Ten Hove had an incredible day just before the medal race, winning two out of three races. This impressive performance brought them level on points with the American duo, Roble and Shea, creating an intense battle for the silver medal on Medal Race day, which the Canadians managed to snatch on the last day. Both teams put on a remarkable show, demonstrating their sailing prowess on the grand stage of the Pan American Games.
