Martine Grael / Kahena Kunze
2025 World Championship
Martine Soffiatti Grael was born on February 12, 1991 in Niterói, Brazil, into one of the country's most storied sailing families. Her father, Torben Grael, is a two time Olympic gold medalist himself. Martine followed a similar path, teaming up with Kahena Kunze in the 49erFX and winning world titles in 2014 before taking Olympic gold at both Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. She's also stepped outside the FX class, racing with Team AkzoNobel in the 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race and later taking on the captaincy of Brazil's SailGP team. She sails out of Rio Yacht Club.
Kahena Kunze was born on March 12, 1991 in São Paulo, Brazil. She's one half of Brazil's most decorated 49erFX partnership, sailing alongside Martine Grael since they teamed up ahead of the class's Olympic debut. The pair became world champions in 2014 and went on to win back to back Olympic gold, first at Rio 2016 on home waters, then again at Tokyo 2020. Before moving into the FX, Kunze raced in the 470 class. She sails out of Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro under coach Javier Torres del Moral.
