The penultimate day of the 28th International Sailing Week in Rio de Janeiro ended with foreign rule in Guanabara Bay Rays. New Zealand leads into the 49er while Denmark leads in the 49erFX. The wind came a little earlier and the Race Committee ran the full compliment of four races per fleet on the Sugarloaf course.
Among men the 49er, Peter Burling and Blair Tuke opened five point lead after nine races and prepare to celebrate another title in Brazilian waters.
“We enjoyed sailing here. The day was quite challenging, with many puffs. We are sailing well, but the results are not as good as we would like. We still need to train more for the Test Event. When we think we know the area of race, everything changes. Despite the confidence, there is nothing like being a local sailor here,” said Peter, who is the skipper of Team New Zealand in the next America’s Cup. Together they won the Test Event and the Intergalactic Championship 2014. Marco Grael and Gabriel Borges are the best Brazilian in 10th place.
Among women, Alex Maloney and Molly Meech, compatriots Peter and Blair, have not had such a good day and dropped to second place. With two wins and a second place, the Danish Maiken Schutt and Anne-Julie Schutt took the tip. In this class there is no Brazilian representatives. Martine Grael and Kunze Kahena, they are written, just not sailing due to commitments with sponsors.
On Thursday the competition comes to an end with the intent to do 3 races for the 49er and 49erFX. The start is scheduled for 12 pm, but the weather forecast indicates another day of light winds.
