Hernán Umpierre / Fernando Diz
Uruguay’s flag-bearers in the 49er, 12th at Quiberon 2026
Hernan Umpierre is a record-breaker for Uruguayan sailing. With Fernando Diz he became the first Uruguayan crew ever to qualify a 49er for the Olympic Games.
At Paris 2024 the pair delivered the standout performance of the country's entire delegation, reaching the medal race and finishing tenth overall. They had earlier won silver at the 2023 Pan American Games.
Umpierre and Diz now set their sights on the path to Los Angeles 2028 as South America's leading skiff crew.
Fernando Diz crews for Hernan Umpierre in a partnership that has rewritten the Uruguayan record books.
Together they earned the nation's first Olympic 49er berth, then made the medal race at Paris 2024 to finish tenth, the best result of any Uruguayan athlete at those Games, having taken Pan American Games silver in 2023.
Diz and Umpierre remain South America's leading skiff crew as they begin a new campaign toward LA 2028.
