Nathan Outteridge was born January 28, 1986, in Waratah, NSW, and grew up in Wangi Wangi on Lake Macquarie, sailing alongside lifelong friend Iain Jensen. A prodigious junior (three straight ISAF Youth World titles, 2002-2004), he made his Olympic debut at Beijing 2008 in the 49er with a different partner, Ben Austin (5th), then teamed with Jensen from 2009, winning Worlds in their second regatta together and again in 2011 and 2012, plus the 2011 Europeans, en route to London 2012 gold. They took Rio 2016 silver, beaten by training partners Peter Burling and Blair Tuke. In 2005, Outteridge was seriously injured in a car accident and faced a long recovery before returning to the top of the sport. Outteridge also won Moth Worlds in 2011 and 2014, campaigned the Nacra 17 with his sister Haylee (Worlds silver 2018, 2020), helmed Artemis Racing in two America's Cup campaigns, skippered Team Japan in SailGP's inaugural 2019 season, co-helmed Emirates Team New Zealand's 2024 America's Cup win, and will skipper the team's 2027 defense. Inducted into the Australian Sailing Hall of Fame in 2025; holds the Medal of the Order of Australia. As of 2026 he skippers Team New Zealand and also races for the Artemis Racing Sweden SailGP team.
