The elimination round has ended today, the top of the leaderboard has changed a little, but the leaders are still the same.
Due to a lack of wind and a long wait onshore the boats went to race at 4.30 pm. The race committee managed to run two races in the wind up to 7 knots and that closes the qualifying round.
Leading from the beginning, Spanish team Diego Botin and Pablo Tunado have 38 points and lead over the Austrian Benjamin Bildstein and David Hussl, who after winning two races today jumped from ninth into second place. Australian crew George Davies and Jack Lloyd dropped to the third place.
Finnish sailors, Noora Ruskola and Camilla Cedercreutz, sailed very well today winning one race and placing third in the other, strengthening their position as leaders. The crew from Singapore, Griselda Khng and Sarah Tan, won one race, and in the second they had an disqualification from starting early, but they remain in second position and has a big advantage over the Spanish crew Maria Cantero and Ana Izquierdo Hernandez Moreno, who moved into third place. Griselda: “I was sailing Optimist, 420, 29er for a while and 470. It’s a big difference between 470 and 49er, because the techniques you do on the water are different. I think we and other competitors are still new to this boat and we are not quite familiar with it. Everyone is improving.” Polish crew Zuzanna Rybicka and Marcellina Sliwinska, so far in the third place, after scoring an individual recall and a bad race, dropped to the eight place.
Tomorrow there will be three short (target time 10 minutes) theatre style races with double points and no discards for the Top 10 teams. Other crews will have one final race. In the 49er class FX all teams will sail three theatre style races.
