Jonas Warrer & Martin Ibsen

Jonas Warrer was born 22 March 1979 in Aarhus, sailing out of Aarhus Sejlklub from age 11. He raced 470s through the late 1990s before moving to the 49er in 2001. Paired with Martin Kirketerp, Warrer arrived in Qingdao for Beijing 2008 in gold-medal form: with an 11-point lead heading into the medal race their mast snapped en route to the start, they borrowed an already-eliminated Croatian boat, started with seconds to spare, finished seventh, and held on for gold after a 19-hour jury hearing dismissed a protest against them. Warrer's career continued well beyond 2008: Rio 2016 (4th, with a different partner), Tokyo 2020/2021 (5th, as Danish flag bearer), Worlds silver in 2014, M32 multihull Worlds silver in 2017, and — as of the mid-2020s — still actively racing, having taken 2025 Worlds bronze with a new partner and stated ambitions toward a fourth Olympic campaign at LA 2028.

Martin Kirketerp (full name Martin Kirketerp Ibsen, competing under 'Martin Ibsen' in 2008) was born 13 July 1982. He partnered Jonas Warrer through the dramatic mast-break, borrowed-boat gold medal race at Beijing 2008. Rather than continuing in the 49er, he stepped away from the class at his competitive peak and moved into other branches of the sport, including replacement crew for Team Sanya on two legs of the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race. He has continued in offshore, professional racing, and short-handed sailing since, and was struck by lightning while sailing at a SailGP event in Singapore. He has a wife and two daughters, who are getting into ice hockey as a family.
