European Medals designed by Jewelry Artist

Today I picked up the brand new medals for the 49er Europeans. They are worth winning!

The medals are designed by famous Finnish jewelry artist and sculptor, Professor Björn Weckström.  Björn started his career in 1958 after graduating from the Finnish Goldsmiths’ school. Now in his 70s, he is still an active designer and sculptor and as recently as 2013 won the prestigious Kaj Franck Design prize.

In their statement, the Prize jury stated that Weckström is a reformer of Finnish jewelry art, whose unique style has aroused both national and international attention since the 1960s. He also has created impressive works in sculpture, many of them inspired by the mythology of antiquity.

Princess Leia of Star Wars fame is one of the celebrities wearing Björn’s jewelry.

Björn Weckström is a keen sailor. He has owned a large number of boats ranging from classic Sixes to a 46 feet Swan Offshore Cruiser. He has crossed the Atlantic Ocean on his own keel and on the Finnish Whitbread Round the World Race participant Fazer Finland. Björn is a longtime member of Nyländska Jaktklubben. He lives and works for part of the year in the Italian city of Pietrasanta, located in Northern Tuscany.

Welcome to pick up your medal, there are 12 of them up for grabbing!
