Charlie McKee & Jonathan McKee

Jonathan Dunn McKee was born December 19, 1959, in Seattle and sailed for Seattle Yacht Club. A three-time All-American at Yale, he won Olympic gold in the Flying Dutchman in 1984 with Carl Buchan — the only American gold in that class's Olympic history — followed by the Flying Dutchman World Championship in 1985. At 40, he partnered his younger brother Charlie in the 49er; the pair became the oldest crew in the Sydney 2000 fleet en route to bronze, then won the 2001 Worlds in Malcesine. Jonathan's career is one of the broadest in modern sailing: three Melges 24 World Championships, four Tasar World Championships with his wife Libby Johnson McKee, America's Cup challenger campaigns in 2003 and 2007, and legs of the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race and 2008 Barcelona World Race. He also coached the US Olympic team to medals in nine of ten classes at Barcelona 1992 and is a widely read writer on racing technique.

Charles McKee was born March 14, 1962, in Seattle, sailed for Seattle Yacht Club, and attended the University of Washington, winning the 1985 ICSA collegiate match racing national title. His Olympic career began as crew in the 470, winning bronze with skipper John Shadden at the windy 1988 Seoul Games. After roughly a decade away from top-level competition — working as a commercial real estate appraiser and coaching the US windsurfing team to a 1992 Olympic silver — McKee returned in the new 49er class alongside his brother Jonathan, finishing 2nd at the 1997 Worlds before Sydney 2000 bronze and the 2001 World title. He later raced America's Cup with OneWorld (2003) and Luna Rossa (2007). Since 2012 he has worked in a leadership role for US Sailing's high-performance program, overseeing coaching, technical development and youth pathways for the US Olympic sailing effort. The McKee brothers were part of the original leadership group within the 49er class, driving a huge revolution in top-flight sailing — they pushed for shorter windward-leeward races, moving sailing from its static, classic image into an extreme sport pushed to the limit.
