Back to overview

The official test event of Tokyo 2020, Ready Steady Tokyo – Sailing, got underway today with the first day of racing.

And the 363 sailors from 47 nations were met with strong winds and big waves in Enoshima, Japan, an ideal way to start six days of competition.

In the 49er fleet, where 21 teams are competing, reigning Olympic champions Peter Burling & Blair Tuke (NZL) have made an ideal start to the test event, sitting first overall after winning two out of three races.

Peter Burling & Blair Tuke (NZL) lead the 49er class after the opening day.

“This is our first event in Enoshima so we are really trying to put our best foot forward,” Burling said. “It’s called the Olympic test event for a reason and we are testing things for next year.”

Tuke added: “You always want to go out and do well on the first day and it was good conditions. We were pretty pumped to get three good ones on the board. It’s quite a short event for us, with only 12 races before the medal race, so it’s a good start.”

Fresh from SailGP Cowes, Dylan Fletcher-Scott & Stuart Bithell (GBR) have also started strongly here, winning their first race to help them to second. Australian brothers Will & Sam Phillips are third.

Charlotte Dobson & Saskia Tidey (GBR) lead the 49erFX class after day one.

The British Sailing Team are also performing well in the 49erFX, with Charlotte Dobson & Saskia Tidey topping the 23-strong fleet.

Two wins out of three races puts them ahead of 2016 Rio Olympic champions Martine Grael & Kahena Kunze (BRA), with Victoria Jurczok & Anika Lorenz (GER) currently in third place.

Today’s other race win went to Ida Marie Baad Nielsen & Marie Thusgaard Olsen (DEN).

Racing continues tomorrow at 12:00 local time on Sunday 18 August. The RS:X Men & Women, 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 fleets are scheduled to sail another three races, with the remaining fleet set to complete two.

Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, is famous for its stunning harbours and sailing culture. It is, without a doubt, a world-class racing and regatta destination.

The downtown competition venue offers quick and easy access to a vibrant city with a celebrated culinary scene, fantastic shopping, and dynamic arts and culture. As well as big city sophistication, Auckland also offers an incredible natural setting; beautiful beaches, volcanic cones, island getaways and expansive parks are never too far away.

Home to sailing champions and the highly anticipated 2021 Americas Cup, Aucklanders and New Zealander’s alike are proud of their sailing heritage. Here, the Championship will enjoy huge support from the public.

Auckland is looking forward to welcoming all athletes, teams and supporters of the 49er, 49er FX and Nacra 17 World Championships.

Registration

Entry is a 2 step process.

  1. use our manage2sail registration system to enter your racing information.
    1. For new people to manage2sail, you must first create a profile, and then after your profile is complete you should enter the regatta.
  2. proceed to the payment portal to pay for your entry fee. For clarity, the fees on the payment system will change over on the dates in the NOR, so non-payment prior to those dates will mean higher entry fees.

APP

We are pleased to let you know we have an app available for all competitors and supporters coming to Auckland to compete and for those following the regatta back home. Please download for free from the app store, 49er FX Nacra This will be continually updated as we have new information about the regatta. The regatta app will be our main communication tool with the sailors at the event so be sure to read and take notice of any push notifications.
