Fleets of 49er and 49erFX sailors are descending on Rio for the first major races on Olympic waters ahead of the 2016 games.  This low-key events is called the Interglactic Championships in Rio and will feature top teams from all over the world with the South American fleets.  Teams will get a chance to familiarize themselves with the city and the racing areas as the aspiring Olympians begin to focus in on their main goal.

The home page of the event is 49er.org, so check in here for all the regatta action.

Home crowds will be looking to local heros Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze to continue their fine form.  This pair have been on the podium for almost every event they’ve competed in to date including a dramatic, last race, blitz at the 2013 World Championships to secure the Bronze medal.

A number of teams from Brazil and Argentina had positive results at the recent world championships and will look to spend much time on the water this winter to move up on the worlds standing and challenge the top teams.

  • Allan Norregaard / Anders Thomsen – DEN
  • Dylan Fletcher / Alain Sign – GBR
