2013 Seiko World Championships 49er & 49er FX  Marseille

The second day of racing at Roucas White Water Stadium in Marseille, and my third day of immersion in the organization of this big machine that is the World Championship 49er and 49er FX, the Olympic sailing series. I thought one thing before embarking on the adventure, but once on the other side of the curtain I realize: This event requires organization and logistics that I had no idea!

Sporty side, the (very) low wind did not stop the boys to run three races, that led to the qualifications for the higher levels. Now, only the first 40 male teams will compete for the title, while the other 57 will compete for the rest of the ranking. Homer, the three teams of the France team are part of the top of the group;) (results).

For girls, who run only one race because of the wind that is permanently removed at the end of the day, the qualifications will be at the end of the next day (see results). I’m glad to see that Julie and Sarah, the French with whom I chatted yesterday did well in the race.

Remember that competitors never run together, but separate fleets and distributed in a clever calculations. What attempts to be explain successively Dimitri (race organizer), Nathalie (member of the race), Beatrice (driver ‘a boat “viewfinder”) and Ben (Secretary General of the 49er class) … In vain, I confess here, I still do not quite understand this system, but it is much better explained here (en english) and here (p6, en français) !

What I realized, however, that there is nothing to organize the sporting side, between the race committee, umpires, security, drivers, dog, there are already some forty volunteers. Add coaches and sports trainers, present during the race, but also all those around, to tell: video production, photographer, press, journalists, social networking relationships (ie bug) … it amounts to a hundred more people.

And on earch? It’s so many people, even more!  Behind Coraline, Emily and Jocelyn, high priestesses of “organic soil”, there are those that ensure the restoration and maintenance – in-dis-pen-sand – the bar at YCPR those who are security and parking, small hands that provide identification and relative to any problem … and a hundred people at the counter.

But what makes this unique event, beyond the high level sport is open to the public, wanted by the City of Marseille and YCPR (the host club). On the site, schools and municipal sailing Shovel remain open to young members who watch, speechless, the great 49er to rush in “their” pool. “This is an exceptional race that takes place here, but we still wanted to keep up our usual activities, such as Handi-sailing trips with the association Voiles au Large

The water stage allows this diverse ground an opportunity that we do not want to deprive Marseille “explains René Tellini, coordinator of events and associations of the site.

So every day is a celebration of the village with his 49er duck fishing, a simulator of sailing and fishing, his boat and his giant inflatable boucy castle for the children … unique. All led by the spirited Olivier, alternating facts and the micro festival of jokes in the press room (all that, given the shaky internet connection I mentioned yesterdaythe greatness of the calm and relaxing atmosphere. Olivier, thank you!).

The general public should make no mistake: this afternoon, families have enjoyed the entertainment and the evening relaxation have come to taste the paella Gilles and watch the live broadcast of the final of the America Cup champions alongside experts and match racing.

That leaves precious and beautiful moments to come this weekend, where the finals of the World Championships 49er and 49er FX will be filmed and broadcast live in tents near the stall Zia Concetta and its tasty bruschetta … I do not know you, but in any case I’ll be there!

Gute Nacht (like say Victoria and Anika, the first of the girls overall)
and congratulations to the American who won this incredible America’s Cup while I was writing these lines Oracle team!
